Target . . .You Had Me At Gold and White

My love affair with Target continues.  Their Threshold Spring 2014 line is laden with white and gold with pops of pink and orchid.  If you have been reading for a while, you know of my obsession with white and gold.  I even have a Pinterest board dedicated to the colors.  Here are a few of my favorites.

Mirror Mirror (Propped) On The Wall

I posted here about some Target finds I found a few months ago.  I could not pass up this wooden starburst mirror I found for only $14.00.

While I liked the classic lines, I was not a fan of the bland wood tone.  It just didn’t stand out to me.

So, I decided to pick up two small bottles of craft paint and paint away.

This is the end result:

Mirror WM 2

I used two different colors of craft paint with a metallic sheen.  The brand was Folk Art in Metallic Taupe and Metallic Sahara Gold.  The were about $2.00 each and I found mine at Michael’s.

I think I am going to put it above the bed in our bedroom.  While I love pops of color around my house, my bedroom is mostly neutral and I think this mirror will blend in nicely.

Mirror WM 1

I propped it above the bed just to test it out. FYI – It takes an act of God to get ANYTHING hung in this house by my husband, so it might remain propped for a long time!  I should really take matters into my own hands, but we have these old plaster walls that just crumble when you try to hang things.

Can you believe the mirror only cost me $14.00?  It was 70% off at Target.  For my tips and tricks for scoring great decor steals at Target go here.

What do you think?  Do you like it above the bed?  Should I “prop” it somewhere else?  Do tell in the comments!

Target Loot

Yesterday, I popped into Target to do my annual post holiday Christmas decor shopping.  I posted tips here for finding decor steals at Target.

At my Target store most things were marked at 50% off, although I am sure some will be marked to 70% eventually.  I found a few things, but I actually think things were more picked over than in years past.  Maybe I should have gone the day after Christmas.  I just didn’t have it in me.

Here is what I did find:

I found this white wreath for 70% off and it was $7.50.  Seriously, at that price, it was coming home with me.

I also found these adorable blocks for 50% off.  They were only $10.  I think they will be so cute to use in my girls’ rooms next year, or even to pose with for Christmas card pictures.

The Dollar Spot was also on clearance.  I found these burlap pillows for only .90.  I think I will use them in my girls’ rooms next year.

Finally, while not Christmas decor, I found these Nate Berkus candle stick holders for 50% off.  Only $10.

I swear I should never buy anything at regular price at my beloved Target!  They also have an after Christmas toy sale that is excellent for stocking up.

So, if you are thinking about stopping by Target for post-Christmas shopping, I would do it sooner rather than later.

Have you found any steals at Target post holiday at your local store?  If so, please do tell in the comments.

Target Bar Cart Styled 3 Ways

I posted here about the amazing brass and wood bar cart at Target.  I bought one myself and so did some of you amazing readers!

I have been asked about how to style it.  Well, apparently I am not the only one in love with it, as some amazing bloggers have posted different ways to style it!  Check it out.

Deal Alert: Target Bar Cart

I have been wanting a bar cart for a while now.  In fact, I posted here about a vintage brass bar cart I was drooling over. Unfortunately, all of the carts I was drawn to were WAY to expensive.

However, the Threshold line at Target has a beautiful brass and wood bar cart right now that I think is a steal at $129.00.

This cart is even more beautiful in person.  I know because I went to Target, and there was no way this was not coming home with me!!!  It looks much more expensive than it is.  Similar carts would cost hundreds more!

In fact, it is similar to this bar cart from Crate and Barrel.  This will set you back $600.00.

Finally, the Beckett Bar Car comes in a brass finish from Williams-Sonoma and it will set you back $999.00

The Threshold cart gets rave reviews online and I bet it sells out.  Get yours while you can!

I am in love with my new bar cart and can’t wait to style it with all of my bar accessories I have stored away for so long.

Seriously, who does not need a mobile bar??  I might just wheel this baby into the bathroom when I give my girls their nightly bath.  That is the time at night when I could use a cocktail for sure!

If  you want to read more about shopping for decor at Target, I wrote about Target’s Threshold line here and here about how to score major deals at Tarjay!

Be on the lookout soon for a post showing how I have styled my cart and recommendations for accessories.

Have a great Monday!

X Bench DIY

Hey All!  I thought today I would share with you one of my favorite DIY’s ever.  Sam over at The Peak of Tres Chic did this amazing DIY on a Target bench and I knew I had to try it myself.

I started out with these two X Benches from Target’s Threshold line.  They were dark leather with dark wood.  They were $80 each, but I got them on sale for around $60.

The dark tones definitely did not fit with my light, neutral bedroom.  My goal was to transform them into a calm and serene element to set at the end of my bed.

I fell in love with this fabric from Acquitaine, but at $50 a yard it was out of my budget.

Venitian Ottoman

Did that stop me?  I don’t think so.  I searched Ebay and found a little over two yards of it for about $15  per yard!!  Major score.  I love Ebay for buying fabric.

The first thing I did was take the seat off the bench, which was very easy.  Just use a screwdriver to take out the screws.

Next, I used Rub N Buff in Gold Leaf on the legs of the bench.  I have only used Rub N Buff on smaller pieces and have been very impressed with how it applied simply with my finger.  However, with a surface area as large as this, I might have chosen paint in lieu of Rub N Buff.  Applying the Rub N Buff with my fingers made it have a slightly streaky look.  I considered painting over it, but decided I actually liked the way it looked in the end.  It looked really natural and organic instead of smooth and polished.

Here are the benches with only the legs painted.

Next, I upholstered the seat cushions.  If the thought of trying to upholster something freaks you out, don’t let it.  If I can do this, so can ANYONE!

First, lay your fabric out on a flat surface and smooth out any creases.  Place the cushion upside down on the fabric.

Second, trim the fabric.  I left about 3 inches around each side and that was perfect.

Third, pull the fabric taut over each side and fold so that the raw edge of the cushion is covered.  Place a staple with a staple gun in the center on each side, so that you have four total. Next, you need to cover the corners.  This requires going really slowly and pulling the fabric really taut so that there are no bumps and lumps.  Just take your time!

IMG_4641 Finally, I screwed the cushions back onto the seat.

Here is the final product.

I LOVE them.  They went from something so generic to something custom looking that fits perfectly in my bedroom.  The options and color combinations are limitless. These could also be moved to a living room for extra seating.  And, if I ever tire of them, they could always be re-painted and re-upholstered.

Although this project was very simple as far as upholstery goes, it gave me confidence, and I will definitely try more projects in the future!

What do you think?  Have you ever tackled an upholstery project?  Was it easier than you thought?

Snagging Decor Steals at Target

Hey All!!  Happy Tuesday!.  I posted here about my love of Target and promised to share my tips for scoring big deals there.  For example, I recently found the items below for 70% OFF.  Woot woot!!

photo (8)

Having the willpower not to pay full price for their beautiful items it key.  So, step one is to put that credit card down and follow the tips listed below.

  • SHOP FREQUENTLY:  As a mom, I find my self going to Target way too often to get necessities, so I have no problem going once a week  just to see what is new and what is on sale.  Once you see items going on sale, don’t buy them just because they are 15% off, unless you can’t live without it. In all likelihood, it will go on sale even further.  Target usually starts off at 15%, then goes to 30%, then 50%, then 70 or 75%.
  • CLEARANCE SCHEDULE:  Get to know your store’s clearance schedule.  As a general guideline, Thursday is the day they mark down housewares and home decor.  In case you are interested, the clearance schedule for other items is below.
  • Monday:  Kid’s Clothing, Stationary, Electronics, Baby
  • Tuesday:  Domestics, Food, Women’s Clothing
  • Wednesday:  Men’s Clothing, Toys, Health and Beauty, Lawn and Garden
  • Thursday:  Housewares, Decor, Shoes, Lingerie, Sporting Goods, Music, Movies, Books, Luggage
  • Friday:  Auto, Hardware, Jewelry, Cosmetics

So, what this means is if you want to score big on home decor markdowns, you should shop on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.  If the store is busy, they may not be able to get to the markdowns until later in the day.

However, this is a general guideline and you may want to find out if your store’s schedule varies. You can always call and speak to someone in the department you are interested in.

  • RED STICKERS and ENDCAPS: Now, onto where you find these home decor gems.  Target’s clearance items always have a red clearance sticker somewhere on them that indicates the old price and the new price.  Also, there is a number in the top right hand portion of the sticker that will either say 15, 30, 50, or 70, indicating the percentage off.  There is also usually signage that indicates clearance items and the percentage off.

Target Clearance

Target Clearance 2

Sometimes the clearance items are just on the normal shelves in the Home Decor department, and sometimes they are on an endcap, which are the small shelves located at the end of an isle. In my store, there can be clearance found on the endcaps from the Home Decor section all the way to the Bed Linens, so I follow the endcaps all the way down.  On occasion, I have found home decor items on endcaps near the housewares (dishware, home electrics, etc.), so it never hurts to look!

Another tip is that sometimes the red clearance stickers are DEAD WRONG.  I have found things marked with stickers and signage that said 30% off that were actually 50% or 70% off.  Therefore, it pays to take the item to one of their handy in store price checkers just to see.  In addition, online prices can vary and I find that they mark down home decor items much slower online.  Finally, Target has inventory item tracking numbers called DPCI Numbers which can be used to search for inventory (when you just have to have two of those lamps!).  They DPCI numbers are usually nine digits and formatted similar to a social security number.  You can call and give the item number to Customer Service or enter it online.

  • COUPONS:  Target has three money-saving coupon tools that can be use simultaneously to score amazing deals.  First, Target has regular coupons you can print on their website.  Just click on coupons and then select Home Decor.  The offers vary week to week.  Second, Target has mobile coupons you can sign up for by texting OFFERS to 827435.  Third, Target now has a money saving app available for Iphone and Android called Cartwheel.

As of the time of posting, there is a Target Mobile coupon for $10 off and $50 home furnishings purchase.  There is also a Cartwheel coupon for 30% off Nate Berkus Bedding.  These coupons can be combined to get a real deal on some quality bedding. This is just and example of how to find even deeper discounts at Target by using their coupons!

If any of you LOVE Target as much as I do, please feel free to add your tips in the comments!

Target Decor

Right on Target

I know that everyone these days is obsessed with mass retailer Target.  It has been lovingly nicknamed Tar-zhay for its chic and cheap clothing and home goods. Where else can you buy Q-Tips in the same trip as a designer maxi-dress or Nate Berkus lamps?  They have the most amazing collaborations with top fashion and interior designers.  You can definitely get designer styles for less!  A great chance to try a new trend.

I am almost embarrassed to admit how many lovely pieces in my home come from Tar-zhay.  Target’s new Threshold line of household and home decor items is also to die for and constantly changing with the seasons.  Here are some of my favorites this season.
