2019 Spring Home Tour

Hello friends both old and new.  Marty at A Stroll Thru Life has done it again and has a team of 30 bloggers ready to show you their homes decked out for Spring. If you are heading over from Carmel at Our Fifth House -Welcome! Don’t you just love Carmel’s home?  She makes it all look so relaxed, laid back and effortless.

If you are new here, I’m Jennifer – a Human Resources consultant by day and a design enthusiast and blogger in the wee hours of the night!  I for one, could not be happier that Spring is upon us.  I have had a rough start to 2019.  I broke my wrist in January.  My dog became very ill in February and it has been unseasonably rainy and dreary here in Northern California.  But now its, March, my cast is off and I am feeling optimistic again.  So let’s start the tour!

Up first is our breakfast room.  It is already blue and white, but I recently found fabulous blue and white china at Homegoods, so that tops of the theme.

My local Trader Joe’s had these beautiful anemone. Normally, I would need to go to a flower mart to get them.  Aren’t they stunning?

Over the holidays I purchased a new piece of abstract art from One Kings Lane and I love it.  Some pillows in a natural pattern and a new fiddle leaf fig top off the green Spring vibe.  The cool textured pot cover is from West Elm.

The dining room is decorated for a brunch with friends.

Finally, my daughter’s room is perfect to accentuate for spring as it is pink and green.

I hope you enjoyed the tour and that you walk away with some inspiration!

Up next is White Arrows Home.  She brings new meaning to vintage and cabin chic!

Be sure to come back and click on the links to the other tours going on all this week!

8 Drop Dead Gorgeous Valentine’s Day Tablescapes

Hi Friends!  Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. So far this February has been filled with a broken wrist, sick kids, and sick me.  My broken wrist is my right hand and I am right handed so I can literally do nothing. It’s driving me to drink and I can’t even open up a bottle of wine!! Given our current state, I highly doubt a beautiful Valentine’s Day dinner will be taking place around our home. So, I will just have to live vicariously through these beautiful tablescapes created by people much more inspired and mobile than I.  Enjoy!

I think it is funny that all of the posts I found with these tablescapes were about hosting a Galentine’s party.  Such a funny trend.  What about you?  Do you have any fun Valentine’s Day plans?

2018 Holiday Home Tour

Hello friends both old and new.  Marty at A Stroll Thru Life has done it again and has a team of 30 bloggers ready to show you their homes decked out for the holidays. If you are heading over from Anita at Far Above Rubies – Welcome!  Isn’t Anita’s vintage bohemian style amazing?

If you are new here, I’m Jennifer – a Human Resources consultant by day and a design enthusiast and blogger in the wee hours of the night!  Our family recently purchased our dream home that we rented for 3 years, so are so excited to fix it up and make it our own one room at a time. Bye bye beige walls and hello color!

Let’s start the tour.  Come on in.  Here is a little sneak peak of the living room.

My favorite vignette this year is our tree.  In the past I have done a “Merry and Bright” jewel-toned theme, but last year, I bought all new ornaments at post-Christmas sales and went with a Parisian Blue theme.

Here she is with the lights on at night.  Such a cool effect!

I was lucky to snag some magnolia that I spray painted gold for the top of the tree.

I bit the bullet and ordered two luxurious trims from Frontgate and Balsam Hill.  I love the fringed look of the gold trim from Frontgate.

The ornaments are from Frontgate and these photos do not do them justice.  The are of such high quality and are so beautiful.

My other favorite space this year is our breakfast room.  That is because for the first time ever we have a second tree in there.  I hosted an event for our daughter’s school and live Christmas trees were donated and I was able to bring one home.  I went with a simple silver theme.  We are a little cramped in the space, but who cares, it is beautiful.

My daughter’s room has a simple pink, gray and white theme.

Adding a little garland around our bed made the bedroom feel a bit more dressed up for the holidays.

Last but not least, I decided to play up our zebra centerpiece and go with a zebra tablescape.

I found these fun zebra appetizer plates at H & M of all places!

I hope you enjoyed the tour.  Up next is Jennifer at Dimples and Tangles.  I adore her colorful and fun style.  You are in for such a treat!

The entire line up is below.  You must check them all out!

Got Guests?

Hi friends!  Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is right around the bend.  I don’t know about you, but for us that means holiday guests.  We have a small home, so making room for guests is a challenge.  Being an excellent host or hostess requires providing your guests with all of the comforts of home away from home.  We do not have a designated guest room, so having guests usually means making our existing rooms that will house guests more comfortable.

Space-saving tricks such as a trundle bed or other small comforts such as a cozy throw and a candle can do the trick.  If you have the space, adding a reading nook with a chair and reading light is a definitely plus.  Another finishing touch is a bedside water carafe for your guests.  Nothing is worse being up in the middle of the night searching in someone’s kitchen for a glass of water!

Online retailer Joss and Main has everything you could possibly need for your home, including finds for the guest room.  You can shop my guest room essentials below.

2018 Fall Home Tour

Hello friends both old and new.  Marty at A Stroll Thru Life has done it again and has a team of 30 bloggers ready to show you their homes decked out for Fall. If you are heading over from Alicia at Thrifty & Chic– Welcome!  Doesn’t Alicia have the most amazing DIY ideas?

If you are new here, I’m Jennifer – a Human Resources consultant by day and a design enthusiast and blogger in the wee hours of the night!  Our family recently purchased our dream home that we rented for 3 years, so are so excited to fix it up and make it our own one room at a time. Bye bye beige walls and hello color!  You will see what I mean when you tour my daughter’s new room!

I don’t normally do too much fall decorating.  Maybe it is because my birthday is in October and growing up I disliked orange and brown, and those were always the featured colors for my special month.  There are also some elements of my tour that are not per se fall, but I am so excited I wanted to show them to you anyway!  First off, we remodeled our kitchen and I am in love.  Second, I made over my daughter’s room.  I hope you enjoy and find inspiration in them even if they are not screaming fall.

So, let’s start the tour.  Starting first with our porch.  I was tickled pink when Trader Joe’s had pumpkins last week.  It is still soo hot here in Northern California, I was not sure if I could track down any real pumpkins.  This is about as fall as I get with our outdoor decor.  My girls are dying to have a graveyard and corpses for Halloween but it is sooo not me.

In the dining room, I went with rustic elements.  Eucalyptus just screams fall to me and I had these fun antlers to play into the rustic/glam vibe.

To the living room I just added some soft florals and added some new pillows.  I was so happy to find these pastel pumpkin pillows at HomeGoods. Orange and brown just do not go with the softer tones in my home.

To me nothing says fall like soup!  Our breakfast nook is where all of our cozy meals take place.  I adore these little lionhead soup bowls I found at Target.  I think they are a Williams-Sonoma knock-off.  I also used our vintage soup tureen to hold our fall-hued flowers.

Now here come the not so fall, but new spaces.  First  up is our kitchen.  We recently did a refresh by redoing the counter tops, backs plash, sink and appliances.

I will have a full post on it soon, but we went with Quartz counter tops that look alot like marble and beveled subway tile.  I am also giddy to report that I now have a deep farmhouse sink.  I was always sooo jealous of all of those Instagram photos of beautiful sinks with flowers haphazardly arranged (aka totally styled) in them.  Bam!  Take that social media.  I am now a flower in the sink kinda gal 🙂

Another one of my favorite features is doing one section of the back splash in this herringbone pattern.  Our floors are hardwood in a herringbone pattern, so I didn’t want to go crazy up top, but I didn’t want it to look boring either.  I think this small vignette is a compromise.

A few white pumpkins bring in a touch of fall.

Fall flowers were a bit sparse in our stores, so I went with the bounty of the season to display on our counter tops.

I also made over my daughter’s room and bit the bullet by wallpapering it in a wallpaper I have loved for years.  It is bold and bright and totally me!

So that’s it.  I hope you found some inspiration for fall and for seasons to come. Up next is Kristy at Starfish Cottage.  Her chic coastal style is not to be missed.  You can also find the full line up below.

2018 Summer Home Tour

Hi everyone!  If you are joining us from Life Love Larson- Welcome!  Wasn’t Andrea’s tour so vibrant?  Her love of plants definitely came through.  A huge thank you to Marty at A Stroll Thru Life for putting this blog hop on.  It’s so full of seasonal decorating ideas each time.

I had big plans for this home tour, much of which did not come to fruition.  We went on vacation the first week of June, only to return with a bout of strep throat for my kids.  The rooms I am sharing here today are honestly the only ones that do not have suitcases and piles of laundry in them.  I am sure some of you can relate!

So, come on in and check out my less than perfect summer home tour.

First up is our entry way. I recently purchased these statement making candles in a vibrant pink.    They are molded out of branches.

In the living room, pillows in blue hues and tons of flowers say summer to me.  Add in some faux coral and poof we feel like we are at the beach.

Up next is our breakfast room.  I often get asked about the bold wallpaper.  It is called Denim Blue Tinted from Walls Republic.  I love it.

These summery butterfly plates were a Homegoods find a few years back.

Nothing says summer like pink to me.  We painted our master bedroom a very pale pink called Pink Ground from Farrow and Ball and I adore it.  Some grocery store orchids add a tropical vibe when combined with the pink.

Finally, is our dining room.  Anyone who has known me for a long time knows my love of collecting seashells.  I wanted this table setting to evoke a relaxed coastal vibe.

As you exit our home, Merle as we call him will greet you.  This planter is the only Spring/Summer gardening I have done all year!

Well that’s a wrap.  Off to go finish unpacking those suitcases.  Next up is Karianne at Thistlewood Farms.  You must go see her tour and read her story.  It is so inspiring! Karianne is a legend in the world of Farmhouse style. The entire week’s lineup is here:

2018 Spring Home Tour

Hello friends both old and new.  Marty at A Stroll Thru Life has done it again and has a team of 30 bloggers ready to show you their homes decked out for Spring. If you are heading over from Vel at Life & Home at 2102 -Welcome! Don’t you just love Vel’s home?  She loves Chinoserie like me and her home is so open and bright.  She has the most amazing windows!

So let’s start the tour.  We have had a ton of late rain this spring, so while I would love to show you our outdoor spaces spruced up for Spring, that was not in the cards this year.  So, we will start with our small entry way.  I think it is so important, no matter how large or small, to create some sort of entry space in your home.  This year, I decked ours out in classic sunny daffodils for Spring.

Come on in next to our living room.  I decorated in pastels for spring.  I added flowers, pillows and a fun throw in pastel hues.

The other side of our living room has a conversation area with two chairs.  I added these fun neutral pillows with tassels from Target for a clean Spring look.

In my daughter’s room I added this faux fiddle leaf fig from World Market.  I also added this fun bunny alarm clock from Pottery Barn Kids.  Cautionary tale:  It looks super cute, but is not the best design.  It is so top heavy it constantly falls over.

In our dining room I tried to create a garden Chinoserie vibe.

The pagodas are from Ballard Designs and I adore them.

The fun green trellis tablecloth was a Homegoods find.

The inspiration for the table started with these pagoda accent plates from Pottery Barn.  I added some fern branches and a flower for an added touch.

Every year, I always try and incorporate some Hunter rain boots into my tour.  This year I went for classic black.  Last year it was these purple boots and before that it was these pink boots.   Did you hear that Hunter is coming out with a collaboration with Target this April?  Count me in!

Last up is our breakfast nook.  Pastel eggs and some macarons made it extra special.  The fun bunny plates are from Target.

Well that is it.  I hope you enjoyed the tour and that you got some inspiration for your Spring home.  Up next is Summer from Simple Stylings.  Her style is so unique and bohemian.  You simply must head over and see what she has in store.

Winter Trend: The Danish Art of Hygge

Hi everyone!  Happy New Year.  After waking up from my New Year’s fog, I am finally getting back to writing on the blog.  January is not my favorite month of the year for various reasons and it is challenging to get motivated.  In thinking about my long winter ahead, I am intrigued by the danish art of hygge.

What the —– is hygge you are probably asking.  Hygge is a danish lifestyle trend.  Think of “hygge” (pronounced “HOO-guh”) as a softer, cozier counterpart to feng shui. But instead of rearranging furniture to find harmony between nature and the environment, hygge is more about embracing life’s simple pleasures—like a steaming cup of coffee, toasty blankets, soft lighting, and nights spent around the dinner table with friends.  It is basically how the danish survive their long, cold winters.   While hygge is all about keeping things simple (think Scandi-style interior design), it also encourages people to live a little and say yes to that extra slice of cake.

You can incorporate a hygge vibe into your home by adding a few essential elements, including cozy throws (preferable chunky ones), pillows, candles and a fire.  Don’t the images below make you want to stay in and hibernate all winter??

Although hygge has been around for a while, I plan on incorporating more of it into my home this year to pull myself out of my January/February funk!  Do you have any wintertime traditions that get you through the colder months?  If so, please help us all by sharing in the comments.

Until next time.

Our 2017 Holiday Home Tour

Hello friends both old and new.  Marty at A Stroll Thru Life has done it again and has a team of 30 bloggers ready to show you their homes decked out for the holidays. If you are heading over from Southern Hospitality – Welcome! Don’t you just love Rhoda’s down to earth style and her holiday home tour is no exception.

So let’s start the tour.  Grab some hot coco and come on in.  On our porch you will find a welcoming scene.  The santa and sleigh were my husband’s grandmothers and we love that it reminds us of her.   This year, I added these holiday pillows made by a local maker called Allie Studio.  We live in an area of our city called East Sacramento and she makes the most amazing holiday pillows.  She does them for all of our city’s neighborhoods and has expanded to cities all over California and beyond.  They could cutomize one for your city!

No tour would be complete without a photo bomb.  I always have my little helpers around when I take photos.

As you enter our home, I added wreaths to our long, narrow hallway and it makes a nice impact.  This year, I opted for red and white on the ribbons.  As you will see, I tried to incorporate a bunch of different themes in my tour.  Classic red, jewel tones and even winter white.

Our tree is mostly jewel tones, and since I am not in the market for all new ornaments, it will probably remain that theme for a few years!

Here are some of my favorite ornaments.  We recently traveled to Bodega Bay and we bought these fun mermaid ornaments for our girls.

This ornament is sentimental as I picked it out right before our first baby was born.

In the dining room I tried to go with a silver and white theme.  My girls loved the fun white snowflakes.

I rarely show our kitchen on the blog as it is need of a major renovation, but we recently redid our hardwood floors in a fun herringbone pattern and got a new runner from Caitlin Wilson Designs that I love, so I thought it was worth a few pics.

My daughter’s room is much softer in calm pastels.

I rarely decorate our bedroom, but opted to this year.  Garland seems like a good idea on the bed until it starts to drop needles!

Well that is it.  I hope you enjoyed the tour and that you got some inspiration for your holiay home.  Up next is Doreen with Hymns and Verses.  Her style is so curated and cozy.  You simply must head over and see what she has in store this yer

2017 Fall Home Tour

Hello friends both old and new.  Marty at A Stroll Thru Life has done it again and has a team of 30 bloggers ready to show you their homes decked out for fall. If you are joining me from Deb at Seeking Lavender Lane- Welcome!  Wasn’t Deb’s tour amazing? She pulls off elegant farmhouse style perfectly!

Full disclosure here. It is still in the mid-90’s where I live and there is not a pumpkin or gourd in site.  So, the fall touches you see will be more of an end-of- summer/ start-of-fall tour.  In addition, right before this tour went up, we had our hardwood floors re-surfaced (you can read about it here), so much of my home was under construction or at least under a layer of dust.  So, the spaces you see here are the salvageable ones.

So, let’s get started with the tour.  As you walk in our home we have a very small entry table that I decided to adorn with this rustic vase I found at an antique fair.  It is brown and wavy.  It is kind of like a tree trunk.  The inside is painted the most beautiful aged gold.  It is a very unique piece and adds the rustic touch I wanted for fall.

The entry leads into our living and dining rooms.  In our dining room, I swapped out some pastel pillows for an animal print bolster.  Reds, oranges, and browns don’t really go with my decor, but I will take an animal print any day!

In our dining room I have touches of fall on a bold tablescape.  The hammered gold vases are from Target and I love them.  They can stand alone on their own or make a lovely vessel for flowers any time of the year.

I opted for simple eucalyptus branches to tone down all the gold.  I used pears in a variety of colors as the centerpiece (no pumpkins remember!!)

I used my favorite fall napkin rings with a gold leaf on them. I purchased them at World Market years ago.

Moving into the breakfast nook, I have a simple flower arrangement next to the soup tureen that has been in our family for years.  Once fall finally arrives in my neck of the woods, homemade soup is definitely on the menu.

No home tour would be complete without a photo of our vintage zebra.  Here I have some velvet pumpkins in jewel tones adorning his feet.  Who needs real pumpkins when you have velvet ones, right?  I have wanted some for years, so I finally but the bullet this year!

I hope you have enjoyed the tour and found some inspiration for your home.

Up next on the tour is Christy from Our Southern Home.  You have to check out her vintage French Country style!

Here is the entire weeks’ line up.  You have to check out each tour.  There is so much inspiration to be found:
