Uncommon Goods: A Source for Unique Gifts and Home Decor

Happy almost Friday everyone!  I am so looking forward to a long 3-day weekend.  I have about a dozen DIY projects I am hoping to tackle.  I may need to reset my expectations!!  But today I wanted to share with you an amazing source for unique gifts and home decor.

I am always on the look out for unique gift ideas.  I, like many of you, have people on my list who are very difficult to buy for.  I am sure you can relate.  That is why I am so excited about the selections from Uncommon Goods.  They offer unique gifts for men, women, children and the home.  If you have never heard of them, Uncommon Goods was founded in 1999 and features items, many of which are hand-made from artists and designers.  You can even read details about the artist behind each gift!  Most of their products are created right here in the USA and about 1/3 of their collection incorporates recycled or upcycled materials.  How cool is that?

Here are a few of my picks from the Uncommon Goods website for gifts and home decor:

OB-Uncommon Goods 1. Basket/ 2. Coasters/ 3. Pillow/ 4. Platter/ 5. Decanter/ 6. Tray

The Lidded Hamper Basket is so cheery and bold that I truly think I wouldn’t mind doing laundry if I used this.   Well, at least it would make it more fun.  This eclectic basket is hand-woven out of cattails!

You might be noticing a trend with my choices!  I love geodes and natural stones, such as agate. This has been  a trend for a while now, and these Agate Coasters are feeding my obsession. Check out all the home and decor items here.

This bold black and white pillow actually contains Hindi Script, hence the name of the pillow.  Black and white is such a classic combination that allows you to layer colors and textures and this pillow is no exception.

This Rose Quartz Platter almost takes my breath away.  The natural beauty of the rose quartz with the luxe glimmer of the glittering silver makes quite a combo.  You will have a conversation-starter no matter what you serve at your next fete!  My birthday is coming up and this is definitely on my wish list.  Since my husband reads the blog, he sometimes takes a hint!  See more gift ideas for women here to help make the woman in your life feel truly special!

Decanters!  When I got married I got a few of these and they still adorn our bar.  This personalized “Yours, Mine, and Ours” Decanter Set melts my heart.  It would make such a lovely, custom wedding gift that a couple would use for a lifetime.  It would also make a very special anniversary gift.  See more gifts here to help make your anniversary extra special!

Finally, this Amethyst Serving Platter just oozes modern sophistication.  I am such a fan of the purple and lavender hues.  I have a few small pieces of it in my home and it definitely adds a hint of glamour to my space.  Sure to be a showpiece at your next social gathering.

And those are just the home decor items!!  If you are looking for something whimsical for the kids (or the child in you), they also had these fun treat pillows.

Uncommon Goods 10

I also love this “keeping up with the Joneses” door mat.  Pretty on point, right?  Their selection of fun and whimsical gifts is unending.

Uncommon Goods 5

I hope you have enjoyed my favorites from Uncommon Goods.  I am really loving this company and their products. They range from unique and eclectic to traditional and elegant.  The best part is that they are a socially responsible company who does business responsibility to impact the world in a positive way.  It is a dream for designer and consumers alike!  If you have a difficult person to buy for on your list, head on over to Uncommon Goods to see their totally unique home decor offerings.

This is a sponsored post written by me for Uncommon Goods.  I truly love each product and these opinions are 100% my own.

Have a wonderful 3-day weekend everyone!

Favorites from Ikea’s 2017 Catalog

Hi all!  The  new Ikea catalog hit my front step a few weeks ago and there are a few new noteworthy items.  You can definitely find design gems at Ikea, you just have to know what to look for.  My mother is the type who goes in to a place like Ikea and gets so overwhelmed she wanders aimlessly and then leaves. I get it!  Let me be your guide.  Here are my top 8 affordable picks!

OB-Ikea 2017 Chaise / Pendant /  Bamboo Pendant / Basket / Chair / Side Table / Cloche /  Rocking Chair

What do you think?  Are you a fan of the Swedish retailer?  A ton of their stuff is too modern for my taste, but every once in a while they surprise me!

I have been busy with back to school shenanigans, sick kids, and decorating for my fall home tour, which will be on the blog soon.  Stay tuned!

Home Decor from Minted

Hi friends!  I have long been a fan of the online retailer Minted for their paper products, invitations and art work.  I recently discovered that they are now selling one-of-a-kind home decor items, such as pillows, curtains and lampshades.  The designs are created by independent artists so you are sure to find something you won’t find anything else.  The other nice feature is that each design comes in each type of decor so you can match your curtains to your pillows if you want no fail decorating or want to be super matchy-matchy.  On top of it all, the pieces are affordable!

Here are a few of my favorites:

I love the idea of creating a custom look!  Kind of like finding a prom dress that not everyone else will have, right?

Later in the week, I hope to show you a fun paint project I did on some thrifted mirrors.  The best news is I hired a handyman to hang them, so they did not sit propped up against the wall like so many mirrors before them 🙂

Hope you are having a great week.

Lutyens Love

Hi friends!!  Over the weekend I made a fun purchase and it is a knockoff of the bench in the image below.  This style of bench is called a Lutyens bench in honor of Sir Edwin Lutyens.  He was a famous British architect who created the style of the bench.  My best friend growing up had them at her home, and I have loved them ever since.  They just scream elegant English garden, right?

They can be very pricey from places like Restoration Hardware, but as you will see below, I found a smaller version for a very reasonable price.  The lines are so beautiful, it looks great in black, white, or even natural teak.  It is so pretty you could even use it indoors.

If you need one more reason to love the Lutyens bench, I think I found one!  This must be from a Polo ad, right?  I will take it!

Lutyens 7

Source- unknown

I purchased this one from Hayneedle and it was on sale for only $250!  Such a great price.  I heard about it from my blogging friend Pam over at Simple Details (that girl knows how to find a deal!)  It is the perfect size for this small covered spot I have on my porch.

Lutyens 8

This beauty is from Walmart and it is only $129.  Talk about getting the look for less.

What do you think?  Timeless or too traditional?  As soon as mine arrives, I will snap some shots to share with you.

Stay tuned because later in the week, I have an awesome giveaway for you.  You won’t want to miss it.

The Story of a Woman Cave

Hi friends!  Yes, I know these days it is all about the man cave, but us women deserve a space all our own too.  When I was approached by Chairish, the online sale site for used and vintage furniture and decor to design my own “woman cave” out of some of their products, I jumped at the chance.

Sites like Chairish help you to achieve a collected and layered look to your home.  I know it is tempting sometimes to go out and buy and entire room from a catalog, but I wouldn’t have the same personal feel if you collected beautiful things you love over time.  I have shopped with Chairish several times and been so pleased.  You can search by area, so that makes it even easier.  For my Sacramento readers, there is a section for Sacramento sales.  It is like Craigslist for the design lover!

Now onto my design.  I had several barstool options to use as my starting point for the design. When I found a set of silver faux bamboo stools, they had me at “hello.”  If you have been reading the blog for a while, you know I have a special place in my heart for Chinoiserie.  So, without further ado, here is my design for my ideal woman cave.

OB-Chairish

Barstools / Bar Cart / Paintings / Rug / Ice Bucket / Highball Glasses

What woman cave would be complete without a bar cart?  And with all the traditional Chinoserie, the modern abstract art is a refreshing juxtaposition.  Add some vintage barware into the mix and I am good to go!

Now this is a space where I could sit back and relax and have a glass of wine or a martini!  If you could dream up your ideal “woman cave” what would it look like?  Would a bar be your spot, or a cozy bedroom with all the luxuries?

Until next time.

Kate Spade Home

Hi lovelies!  Happy Monday.  I was browsing through an issue of House Beautiful over the weekend (I am woefully behind on my leisure reading 🙂  and I came across a few glossy pages for Kate Spade’s new home line.  She has always carried a few home decor items, such as vases, frames and pillows.  However, now she has a complete line featuring furniture, rugs and lighting.

Kate Spade Home 1

Let me just say that the new line is quintessentially Kate Spade.  It is the perfect blend of modern and vintage, chic and cheery.  But, man the pieces are pricey.  They are a perfect candidate to use for inspiration to find the look for less.  Here are a few of my favorites!

The Money Pit Update: Roman Shades

Hi everyone and happy Friday!!

I have been furiously making plans for updates to our new (ish) home.  One thing that came along with our beautiful old home (aka “The Money Pit”), was tons of beautiful old windows.  The home is on the corner of a very busy street, so privacy is a concern for us.  In addition, our new bathroom renovation, that I wrote about here, left us completely exposed to our neighbors.  Eek!

So, when Blindster reached out to me with an opportunity to try out some of their window coverings, I jumped at the opportunity!  I felt that our kitchen, which faces the busy street and our new bathroom were the best places to start.

I have always been a huge fan of Roman shades and have even contemplated DIY’ing some of my own. For our new bathroom I chose their Premium Roman Shades in this fun graphic print. How perfect does it go with my black, white and brass color scheme?

Blindster 5

The shades obviously go all the way down, but I love the way they lay when they are pulled up half way!

Blindster 6

Blindster 7

For the kitchen, I went with this pattern in the Premium Roman Shades called Kitani Indigo.  I was a little unsure about how the pattern on the fabric would look in person, but I cannot tell you how much I love these shades.  The fabric is beautiful and the print modern, yet classic with its blue and white tones. It provides the perfect amount of privacy and they are so easy to open and close.

Windows can be so challenging to photograph, these photos do not do justice to how beautiful these roman shades are.

Blindster 1

Blindster 3

Here is this fun pattern up close.  I LOVE it so much!

Blindster 4

Going with a custom product like this was the perfect solution for us.  As our home is an older home, the windows are difficult to fit.  That was no problem at all with their online measuring guide that helped me completely customize the shades.  You can even customize the type of lining and sides the pulls are on. And if they don’t get it right, they have a special Fit-or-Free policy that guarantees your money back!

The shades arrived lightning fast and were a breeze for me (aka my husband) to install. We have had the shades for about 2 weeks now and they are a dream come true.  I no longer have to worry about my neighbors getting a peep show!

We have so many more windows to cover in our home.  We plan to plug along room by room. That is the thing with window coverings; they can be so expensive, it is hard to do an entire house at once.  Blindster is such an affordable option, you practically CAN afford to do an entire home Right now they are offering 25% off everything.  You can see their Facebook page for details.

Tell me how do you cover your windows.  Shutters, blinds, curtains?  Do you do it for privacy or more for looks?

Until next time . . .

What’s New at Ballard Designs

Hi lovely readers!  I picked up the new Ballard Designs catalog over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised to see they had a variety of new items.

The style at Ballard is right up my alley.  It is founded in the traditional, but they also throw in modern and whimsical accents.  Here are my picks from their new catalog:

Ballard 2016 1 The new Octavia bookcase is just so fun and unique.  How fun would it be to display decor accents in the little octagons?  It comes in a variety of colors as well.

Ballard 2016 2

The Felicity line of acrylic end and coffee tables are just what I mean when I say that Ballard injects a little modern into their traditional designs.

Ballard 2016 The nailhead trim adds so much to the simple lines of the Haynes dining chair.

Ballard 2016 4 I am not a huge fan of animal print, but I find the antelope print on this rug to be so serene.  I would love to incorporate it into one of my neutral spaces.  Here it is used in a living room.  So rich and luxurious, right?

Ballard 2016 5

The imperfect chevron print on these pillows would create a graphic punch in any space.

Ballard 2016 8

I am on the lookout for art for our new home and I have always loved the dreamy abstract art from Ballards.  This blue piece from the new catalog is no exception.

Ballard 2016 9

If you have been reading the blog for a while, you know I am a huge fan of faux bamboo.  Can’t get enough of it!  This bamboo sconce would be perfect in an entry way or hallway.

Ballard 2016 10

One of my favorite things I saw in the catalog was not even something new.  It is a deal they are running on the Dayna chairs.  An oldie but a goodie.  It is one of their Best of Ballard sales.  You can get two side chairs for $399.00 or an arm-chair for $249.00.  Did I mention how much I love faux bamboo?  If you are a fan too, this is a great time to pick them up on sale, as they rarely go on sale.

What do you think?  Are you a Ballard fan?  Do you have anything you are swooning over that is new?  Do tell in the comments!

Our 2015 Holiday Card

Hi friends!  I recently had a friend ask on Facebook if we thought the internet had killed the Christmas card.  With all of the digital options these days, I could see how one could think that might be true.

However, one of the things I look forward to each holiday season, is getting the mail and seeing Christmas cards with our smiling friends and family on the cover.  Given our busy and hectic lives these days it is nice to connect with people we don’t see all the time.

I love doing a card each year.  Here is our 2015 Holiday Card.  I tend to prefer jewel tones for Christmas rather than traditional red and green.  Hence, our card is “Merry and Bright.”  It is from the Tiny Prints holiday card collection.

Tiny Prints Holiday Card 4

Tiny Prints Holiday Card 1

In order to make sending the cards a breeze, I used these coordinating personalized address labels.  One less thing to do!

Tiny Prints Holiday Card 5

As if sticking a sticker on is not easy enough, I also have this personalized address stamp I will use.  I have wanted one of these for years and now that we are finally in our “forever” home, I can justify it.

Tiny Prints Holiday Card 3

Tiny Prints Holiday Card 2

What do you think?  Do you like to stray from red and green once in a while?  Do you think the internet killed the Christmas card?  Do send cards every year?

Target Fall 2015: Mad for Plaid

Hi friends!  I know you guys have seen the commercials for the amazing fall lines at Target.  I find myself rocking out and then re-winding to see all the goodies that went by way too fast the first time.

Well no surprises this year, Target has done it again.  Their line of fall clothing, home decor and even kitchen accessories is all about plaid. Here are a few of my favorites.

OB-Target Fall 2015

ThrowStag Head / Pillow / DOF Glass / Candle Holder / Canister

How fun would those quail candle holders be for a Thanksgiving table??

What do you think?  Do you decorate for fall?  The brass and orange are so cozy.  Makes me want to curl up on the couch.  Too bad it is still in the 90’s in California!!
