Blogging Anniversary and a GIVEAWAY!!!

Pottery Barn Giveaway

Hi lovelies!  I almost can’t believe it, but this week marks my 2 year blogging anniversary. Blogging has been such a blessing in my life.  It give me an outlet for my creative side.  It gives me a chance to write about something I am passionate about (in case you are wondering, employment law does not do it for me!)  It has also given me the opportunity to meet some amazing blogging buddies that I would probably not met otherwise.  I love how a common interest can bring together people who are really very different based upon their passion.

I am also so thankful for my lovely readers who take the time to read and make comments.  There are a million other design blogs out there to follow and I am so honored that you take the time to connect with me.  In honor of my anniversary I am having a giveaway for a $100 Pottery Barn gift card.  Think of the cozy fall decor you could get?  They even have my favorite tortoise shell pieces.

I also have exciting news coming up that I can’t wait to share regarding some big changes ahead for us.  It is going to involve a ton of opportunity for DIY projects, so I can’t wait to share.

Just follow the Rafflecopter instructions below.

Where I Have Been and a Decor Score

Hi my lovely readers!  I know, it has been ages since I wrote a blog  post.  As some of you may know, my job which is supposed to be part-time has been more full-time lately.  I have also been studying for a national certification exam that has taken every moment of my spare time.  I apologize!

Well, the good news is that I PASSED my exam.  Whew!!  I really put in a lot of hours at the end because lord knows I did not want to take the darn test again.

HR Cert

Well, I think all of my hard work was rewarded because a few days after I took the test, my dear friend Shavonda from SGStyle texted me about an amazing set of vintage Thomasville faux bamboo furniture for sale for a steal on Craigslist.  The entire set, which included a dining table, four chairs, a china hutch and a buffet was only $400.  The problem was that I did not need all of the furniture.  Well, it turned out that Shavonda had a friend who wanted the chairs and I wanted the table and hutch, so Shavonda took the buffet and we were ready to roll.

Here are photos of the hutch (sorry for the photo quality but I took them on my phone.)

Thomasville Faux Bamboo Hutch 2

Thomasville Faux Bamboo Hutch

I am in love with it!!  I am going to live with it in this color for a while and see if I want to paint it.  I also found some faux bamboo dining chairs that I haven’t had time to post about, but I am going to have a totally new dining room!!  My husband officially wins husband of the year award because he helped me move all of this furniture and even drove three hours to get me the faux bamboo chairs.  He seriously thinks I am crazy, but I don’t care. I can’t pass up a vintage decor steal.

I hope you have all been doing well and I am definitely going to be posting more regularly now that my test is over!

My Latest Finds and Where I am Featured Today

Happy Tuesday everyone!  I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day.

Today, I wanted to share with you some of my latest thrifted treasures.  As you can see below, apparently I am really crushing on brass.

First up, is a pair of brass peacocks I found at the antique faire for only $30.  They were in great condition and sets like them sell for hundreds on sites like Chairish and Ebay.

Next up is a set of pyrite (aka “Fools Gold”).  I have been on the hunt for some so I can make some custom knobs.

I apologize for the blurriness of some of these photos, but I think I may have broken my camera. Don’t tell my husband 🙂

Finally, I found these adorable brass swans at an estate sale for $2.  They made the mama and papa swans I already own so happy.  Their family is now complete!

So there you have it!  I hope brass stays popular for a while as I am up to my ears in it.

Also, today I am being interviewed by Dagmara at Glamista Home.  Head on  over and check it out.  You should also check out Glamista Home.  She is all about glamour and is right up my alley!

My Favorite Spot in Our Home

Hello everyone!!  This is Part II of a fun blogging series I am doing with four talented bloggers. This month we are featuring our favorite spot on our homes.  Everyone has a favorite place in their home, right?.  One that beckons them to sit down in relax. One where they go to hide from the kids?? For many, that place is the retreat of their bedroom.  Not so much for me. You see, my bedroom also houses my disheveled office.  I attempted to add a desk to tame the clutter, and you can read about that here.  Still, it is not a place I go to relax, as my work is always staring me in the face.

Instead, my favorite spot in our home is our living room.  After all, it is where all of the “living” is done.  Our home is on the smaller side and only has a living room and not a living room/family room combination.  So we spend a lot of time in it.  We are in desperate need of new couches, but with a 3 an 5 year old, I am not making that investment until we outgrow the peanut butter on hands phase, if you know what I mean.

I have made the best of the sofa by adding fun throw pillows to distract.  I can’t think of a more affordable decorating trick that makes such an impact. Pillows are definitely my go-to.  I am a hoarder of sorts!

Here is a shot of my favorite chair in the room.  She (yes, it is a she), is all dolled up for Christmas.

Our living room also features some DIY’s I am proud of.  My husband and I made this DIY upholstered console table and I love the way it ties into our space.  You can read a full tutorial here.

I love our family room because it is cozy, yet sophisticated.  There is nothing better than sitting down on a weekend, sharing a bottle of wine (or two) and hanging out there.  Speaking of wine, what room would be complete without a bar cart?  Here is ours.  It is from Target and I Heart It!  You see me rave about it and give tips on how to style it here.

What is your favorite space in your home?  Don’t tell me it is the bedroom.  I will be jealous . . .

Fore more decor and design inspiration, head on over to my blogging buddies to see what their favorite spot is!

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Hey all!  I am popping in today to share my picks for Mother’s Day this year.  I actually do these gift guides for personal reasons because sometimes the hubs actually reads the blog and takes the hints.  Last year I got the adorable flamingo flats I wished for here.  Apparently, compulsively dropping hints verbally does not work!  Getting this up later than I planned, but better late than never! Aren’t the macaron trinket boxes adorable?  What is your favorite pick?  Anything special on your wish list this year?

Have a great Monday!! xoxo

Awfulizing

Hi friends!  Well, I have to share with you a “moment” I had yesterday.  I went, like I do most nights, to log into the blog to write a post or check comments.  When I hit the enter button to get to my site, I got redirected to this scary site with a screen of blue death that said:

http://sites.securepaynet.net/redirect_0.html

This site is currently unavailable. If you are the owner of this site, please contact us at 1-480-505-8855 at your earliest convenience.

I immediately ran to my other computer to see if it was the same on that device.  It was.  Ugh oh.  This did NOT sound good.  Of course, instead of being calm, I immediately panicked.  Like a sick person dangerously looking on Web MD for a diagnosis, I began to Google the issue.  What I found make my heart pound out of my chest.  I found things that said it meant my site was being falsely detected as malware and I found things saying I had been hacked.  I then searched for what to do when your site gets hacked.  Bad idea.  This list told me to:

#1 Stay calm- CRAP!!!  We are way beyond that!

#2 Install a firewall- WTF??  If I knew how to do that I probably wouldn’t have been hacked in the first place.

#3 Be mindful of website blacklists – just what I need, my barely surviving blog to be “blacklisted.”

#4 Take a back up of what you have left.  At that point, I and went and looked at where I believed my blog had been backing up.  Not much was there.  I felt myself having a very Carrie Bradshaw moment from Sex and The City.  “Did you back up your data?  Umm I don’t do that. Apparently, everyone is secretly running home at night and backing up their work.”

bradshawjpg

#5 Find and remove the hack – Are there people you can pay to do this?  My blog that I basically pay to run is going to cost me hundreds to fix- I don’t think so!  The one thing about running this blog that is hard for me is the technology.  I am afraid to touch or change anything because I am sooo not technical!

At the end of the article, it proposed deleting everything and starting over from scratch.  I felt the weight of a ball in the pit of my stomach. All of the time and effort I put into this blog, gone to waste.  All of the DIY projects, photo editing and writing, all gone.

That is where I started “Awfulizing” as they call it.  Awfulizing is they by-product of irrational self-talk that turns everything into a worse-case scenario.  My blog and all of the hard work behind it is gone, I should just give up now, my dreams are never going to come true, I am silly to think I could have a successful blog, I will never be successful.  You see how it works.  This is the type of overreacting that I tell my children is unacceptable, yet there I was engulfed in my own impending doom.

Finally, my husband (aka the voice of reason,) told me to just try and call my hosting provider.  While lamenting that there was nothing they could do to help, I reluctantly picked up the phone and waited on hold (while continuing to have spiraling thoughts).  When I got someone on the phone and told them what I was seeing when I went to my site, they immediately told me, “your site has been suspended for failure to pay fees.”  Rarely, would I jump for joy at such news, but this was music to my ears.  That was it???  Apparently, the credit card I had on file for auto-renew had just expired so they could not process my payment.

Within minutes my site was back up online.  Crisis averted.  But this situation told me a lot about my ability to be irrational and envision apocolyptic scenarios.  There is something to be said about thinking positive.  Even if I had been hacked, it was probably fixable.

Have you ever been guilty of awfulizing?  I think it is my new favorite word!  If so, do you have any tips for talking yourself down from the ledge?

So, as they say, I am off to breath and reboot!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Santa Barbara Style

So, last weekend on Valentine’s Day, I was enjoying my annual chick flick marathon and I stumbled on the movie “It’s Complicated” with Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep.  It takes place in Santa Barbara and I found myself swooning of the interiors in the film.  There is something so effortlessly chic about the way they live in Santa Barbara.  It looks casual, yet elegant.  You could probably spend thousands and thousands of dollars trying to create the effortless “undecorated” look the interiors below achieve.

Here is a shot of one some of the rooms from the movie.

It's Complicated House 2

It's Complicated House

Santa Barbara is such a relaxed coastal town, I love how you can live outdoors 365 days a year, and am so fond of the elegant patios and pools that are so simply styled.

It turns out, that the set designer for It’s Complicated has also designed many of the houses in some of my other favorite movies.  She was the set designer for Somethings Gotta Give and Father of the Bride. Now I would take any of these homes any day of the year!
Do you have a favorite movie house?  If so, do tell in the comments, so I don’t feel like the lone dork who thinks of this stuff while I watch movies!
Have a great Monday!

Chic Playrooms

Recently, I have had playrooms on the brain (no, not the 50 Shades of Grey type!)  We have been toying around with the idea of having our girls share a room and using the extra room for an office/playroom.  My main concern is it ending up a chaotic, unstructured place where toys are thrown everywhere.  I started a Pinterest board on playrooms and what I am finding is that the key is using tons of practical storage, whimsy and decor that is fun, but not childish.  Here are some of my favorite rooms.

Do you have a playroom?  How do you keep it kid friendly and stylish at the same time?  Most importantly, how do you contain the mess???

Valentine’s Day Ideas for Kids

Hi friends!  Well, it is officially February and that means I am wracking my brain for cute ideas for Valentine’s Day for my little girls to bring to school.  I really try not to be a “I don’t know how she does it” mom, but gone are the days of easy, basic valentines that I remember so well growing up.

Here are some of the best (and easiest) ideas I saw during my search.

I am really liking the “I dig you” one with the shovel, although the apple sauce squeezer one is tempting, since I have everything on hand.

What do you do for  your kids on Valentine’s Day?  Do you go all out or try to keep it simple?

I hope these ideas gave you some inspiration.  I guarantee that with little effort on these, someone will be wondering, “how does she do it?”

Have a great Monday!!
